So true Judy! I guess we want all to feel the pure joy and excitement we feel every time we open the lid of the kiln. We may not always be happy with what we find, the leading up to it is exciting..LOL

Quite a haul to NY from AZ, besides that you got that white stuff there - we start complaining when the temperature drops below 65F and really complain when it drops into the 40's (like now), but it is only rain , not that white stuff

Alan, I forgot you were in Az. You have got to go see the Chihuly exhibit. I was emailed this notice months ago and today I saw pictures posted on another glass site of some of the work. Oh my, You need to go and It looks like the night time walk is amazing. The whole place is set up with luminary bags. Go check it out and bring us back photos to drool over. Thanks!

Quote
The Desert Botanical Gardens Chihuly exhibit dates are from 11/22/08
through 5/31/09. We have been asked to line up people who would be
interested in helping to clean and maintain the beautiful Chihuly
glass pieces in this exhibition. Right now we anticipate it will be
volunteer only (i.e. no pay). We are looking into gas money, some
small stipend, or other barter. If you live in other areas / states,
if you would like to come to Phoenix during this time, we can put you
up in our studio at the Carefree Resort. It is a nice room (hotel
room). Private, quiet, nice and beautiful setting, and more. No
charge to you. Let me know if any of you would like to come during
our warm winter months and help.

We welcome anyone who wants to help for a day or two, or a week, or
even ongoing. It is a pretty large task, so the more help we can
get, the better it will be. You will be trained "the Chihuly method"
for cleaning and maintenance (and bird nest removal). It is a fun
job, and you will have help. You won't be alone, and worrying about
the glass. It will be fun to meet everyone, and work together.

We will be cleaning the glass (outdoor exhibits) three times a week.
The days that the glass will need cleaning is Wednesday, Thursday &
Saturday. Each cleaning day has specific pieces that will need
cleaning and inspection, along with a time frame that it needs to be
done in. Some pieces are large, and you will have assistance in
working with those. Wednesdays the cleaning will be starting at
7am. There are two groups being cleaned on Tuesdays, which will run
from 7am - 9am. Thrusday the cleaning is also two areas, running
from 7am - noon. Saturday is a bit larger area, and will be 7am -
noon.

If you want to help (one day or lots of days) please email me
direct. Let me know how to contact you, and when you would be
available. We welcome you, even if you can only do one day. There
are a couple of online videos we will need for you to watch about
working with this precious glass.

For information about the exhibit, you can go to www.chihuly.com or
www.dbg.org .

Email or call me at: Desert Glasshopper Studio 480-488-2425, email
glasshopperaz@yahoo.com or glasshopperaz@aol.com .

Hope to see you at the gardens! By the way the Luminaria De Los
Noches tour will include the Chihuly exhibits this year. Spectacular
event!

About a 2 hour drive, but we're not even gonna go anywhere near that white stuff, especially with a bunch of flat=landers that can't even drive in the rain, let alone ice and snow! poke

By staying in the house   Duh

no, seriously, learn how to drive on ice - we learned by driving in a parking lot of a closed store - Dad said to go over to the other side, by the lamp post - WITHOUT hitting it. So I slowly started across the parking lot, he reached over with his foot and pushed my foot on the accelerator to the floor, then he yells at me to STOP. Well I'm scared spitless by this time, so I stomped on the brake. When we finally stopped spinning, he says let's do it again, this time don't pussyfoot around, DRIVE. After what seemed like an eternity I finally got the hang of how to drive on ice without studded tires or chains - it does take practice.

Last year I was driving over an overpass and just went sideways.  I don't know why, but I did.  Scared me so bad, that now I puut puut down the road too slow when its sleeting.  And I know thats dangerous also.  I guess I could just stay home from work.  Idea

The new cars have ABS( I think it's called), anti skid breaks. They work awesome on ice. Hammer down on the break and let the computer keep you straight on the road. I never would have believed it possible until we bought one. I'll never have an other car with out it.

True, ABS is a wonderful invention, but there is usually a very loose nut behind the steering wheel that does not understand that the hammering sound they hear when they attempt a panic stop is the computer keeping the going straight and the fools take their foot off of the brake pedal and smack into someone or something!  smack glass

I didn't know it  fish smack So you DO push the brake and stay on the brake till it stops?  I have a 2001 bug and a 98 expedition.  Do either have this or are they too old?

Not really sure, ABS has been around for a few years, your dealer/mechanic would know.

Yes, ask your dealer. If you have ABS, hammer the break and stay there, on ice. It is like magic on how it will keep you going straight. You do still have to allow enough stopping distance, but you should not spin.

Old brakes you want to tap your brakes to re make contact with the road surface constantly. Thus , more control and less likely to totally break away and spin out.

Once you start spinning, brakes off, then turn into your spin to correct it. If it is more than a little fish tail, your back passes your front, PRAY! and enjoy the ride.  confused

Yes and we've been getting that stuff the last couple of days. It melts the next day but it's a reminder and I fear a warning of what's to come.

Its a wonderful art i have found. I like it. Well i would like to share some which i use to made at Christmas:
Tree topper
Materials needed
1)  Styrofoam 12” x12”x 2”
2)  Exacto knife
3)  Spray paint
4)  Silver pipe cleaners (optional)
5)  Paper
6)  Pen
7)  Scissors
Cool  Emery board
9)  Wooden spoon

Fold your paper into eights and cut out the traditional snowflake. Use the snowflake as a pattern on the styrofoam block. Trace around with your pen. Using an Exacto blade cut out the snowflake. Smooth the edges with your emery board. When you have it exactly like you want it, you can spray paint it white. If you prefer you can add clear or silver glitter sprinkled on top. Use the handle of your wooden spoon to poke an opening for the top branch to be pushed into. You can add a large bow just below it with soft blue netting if you choose.
