sorry Dear, we are all bad that way, we get lost in our projects.  My better half is lucky to get clean clothes and a hot meal.  No just kidding, but it could happen   smack

A big wow barrel! What do you use to cut the glass up with...a mosaic nipper/cutter?
I wanted elongated strips so the grout lines would fllow the natural direction of the hair on a deer. I cut the black glass into 2 inch strips and then nipped them a variety of widths. I have gone through 7 square feet so far. Narrow strips were used where there was a lot of close contours and wider strips where I had flat areas. No two pieces of glass are the same. I had to cut every piece to fit where it belonged. Im well over 10,000 pieces. At least 25% of the glass needed to have the bottom ground or beveled so it would butt up tight against the piece next to it. I had to learn all kind of new ways to use a grinder.

The nipper is much faster then a glass cutter when needing this many pieces. I think the uneveness adds to the flow of the hair. Straight perfectly square pieces wouldnt conform to all the tight muscles molded into the deer form. One problem I didnt realize I would have is that black glass does not show the marker lines. I had to go to the grinder and memorize what needed to be removed from each side and corner. This required a lot more trips back to the grinder than if I just could have drawn on the glass with a marker to show me how much to remove.

The permanent markers also come in silver, which is what I use on black or dark glass. I love the way this is looking. Please report the comments you get at the convention.

I love my nippers for small pieces and use a cutter for bigger ones

Drawing the glass lines (aka pattern) on the body like that is necessary to control the flow and the fitting.  When I do that, I then trace the patten to vellum and cut it out for an exact fit.

A couple thing: Watch the thickness of the grout lines and when the surface is really tight and the glass sits on a peak, you can split it (or a couple pieces in the area) so that they better fit the contour.

this was my first 3-d project so I quikly invented the "rocker rule"- If a piece rocks a little, I split it in two/ If a piece rocks a lot I split it in three or four.
You could not possibly patern theese deer forms. You cant see it in the pictures but the muscle structure covers the whole body. The muscles twist and turn and are relaxed and flexed. Theese taxidermy form companies even change the muscles depending on the direction and height of the head. The left side of the form did not match the right side of the form because the head is turning left. It would have been easyier if I sanded down the muscles on the foam or at least eliminated some of the steeper twisting areas but I left them on and beveled and concaved the bottoms of each piece of glass when close to those areas. My knowledge of flat work came in handy but was only half what I needed to know to complete a 3-d project like this. I had to learn new things by trial and error. If I do another one which is already planned I should be able to cut the time down dramatical from the 600 hours this took.

WOW I had to take the time to join the group just to be able to tell you how wonderful this deer is. I have been considering doing horns. The mount makes it fantastic. I understand the contour thing. I did a small plastic deer only not as wonderful as yours is. Was a real learning experience. Thanks for the tour through your progress and completion.
