I'm thinking about getting a c16 full lamp form.  The only lamp I have done was not curved and I used a spider.  How do I know what size vase cap to order along with the c16 form?  Does it matter?  I think 3" sounds about right, but I really have no clue.

most of the ones I have seen tell you what size cap you need.  JF

I don't know if I can add much to this..but here goes.  It depends on whether it's a Worden system or Odyssey...but where ever you order the lamp form...they should be able to tell you what you need to go with it.  I have two Odyssey lamp forms...I needed a brass ring for the top, which will be soldered to the inside dimension of the top and then a vase cap will be soldered to the top outside.  I think that these are usually done like this.  But hopefully, someone that has experience with them will add more to this post.
Good luck...I can't wait to start in on mine.

The C16 shade is a Worden design and that shape takes either a 3" or a 4" vase cap depending upon the design you selelct.
http://www.wordensystem.com/C16/C16Series.html  You can select one from that page.

Of course, if you make the design to accept the 3" vase cap, you have it made!
That is exactly how it is done!

I am finally getting around to using my 3" vase cap.  I am going to patinate with black patina.  Can I patinate the brass vase cap to match?  What's the best way to tin the cap?  Will it look blob-y or irregular?  I would love to see pictures of a vase cap that has been tinned and patinated.

Are you asking about plain vase caps or the cap which goes with the ring and wheel?

The secret to smooth tinning is lot 'o heat, lots o' flux and damned little solder.
A brass vase cap is easiest tinned with the aid of a butane torch - before it's installed. If it's already installed it can be tinned with your iron.

Getting it smooth with the torch is a snap. Hold onto the cap with pliers (Keep fingers away) and with the heat concentrated in that little flame any lumps or bumps will just run off the edge, hopefully not into your lap.

Again, hold the vase cap with pliers. With the iron as hot as you can get it, apply a little solder with the flat of your iron at the top and pull the solder toward the edge by continually . Do it slowly and and excess will be pulled down and drip off the edge. A little more patience is required with the iron than with the torch.

Sometimes a vase cap can be left as brass, and look quite attractive. With the heavier "heat" caps, I prefer to leave un patinated.
