We have come across an opportunity to sell our stained glass in a shop (plus the selling at craft fairs and such) and I have been thinking hard about the lead issue.  How can we cover ourselves so people will understand that our products are not lead free but not be scared away.  We use 50/50 and 60/40 solder.  Should we compose a small disclaimer?

We are making mostly suncatchers and small panels. These are things that, hypothetically, would remain hanging in a window and not handled much.

We are also beginning to make candle holders (tea light mostly) and boxes.  These things may be handled a bit more.

I know lead is not as dangerous in some forms compared to others (like old paint).  I just want to make sure that we are not going to end up in some stupid legal battle because we have lead in our products.
Thanks for any advice in advance.

I can't give you legal advise, but I can tell you what I have done.

I made a hang tag that each customer gets explaining that the solder is lead based.  I tell them, if they have cuts on their hands at the time they are going to wash the item to make sure to cover the cuts.  I go on to explain that if the piece is for a child to let me know that it must be made with lead free solder.

I don't think I have even one person that didn't realize that the solder had lead in it  Many have even said "how do you get the lead on the glass'?

The teacher I had said there was no reason to do what I did, but like you, I just felt a little safer.

You might include a note with each piece stating: As with all true stained glass, this product contains lead. Please keep out of reach of chidren, and wash hands after handling.

Thanks so much for the quick responses.

Kev, this is along the lines of what I was thinking of adding to the tags, especially for the pieces in the shop.  Maybe we should make a sign for our craft fair table as well.

Have it printed on the back of business cards and use them as the tags. That way people can also pass them to others and maybe you'll get even more business.

I have a few labels  -Traditional or Foil leaded, Lead free, and for gifts a tongue in cheek twist on the CA State laws saying it does not conform!

Just pulled my hang tags out regarding the question on lead.  Attempted to scan them into program, but could not get clear copy that way, so here goes, this is what I have on the hang tag. I use the post card stock that is available at all office supply stores.
The following is on the front of my hand tags

1. the name of my studio
2.  my phone number
3.  my logo
4. statement: "Caring for your Stained Glass Purchase"
Do not use any cleaner which contains either an
                abrasive substance or ammonia
Children should not be allowed to handle it.  If you need an item for a child,
I can create it with lead free solder

Prior to cleaning your item, if you have any cuts on your hands, cover them

On the back of my hang tags, I have several pictures of pieces that I have made for customers and or gifts

I hope this helps you.  JF
