I was given a great gift to use with my glass painting experiments, Porcupine quills. So it was only fitting to use them on the return gift.

Thanks again Lauren for the huge African Quills.

I took a picture of Lauren from our Alaska/Yukon thread and cut it up , then added a Waterblommetjie to the fore ground.

Next I full fused a base set of colors on to a clear piece of glass. The glass was supposed to all be 96 coe.

Boy was I surprised when one of the green leaves turned out to be completely covered with divit and a big ridge where it touched other glass. Incompatible , @$!$*. Translation, oh poop!

I decided to cut the offending green leaf out and the same green off the corner, fill the space with a different green piece of glass, and full fuse again.

Unfortunately I must not have cut enough of the ridge that formed between the green and the rest of the piece. Because I got a second smaller ridge, but the divit traveled onto the white glass now. Growlllllllllll.

So I cut the leaf out AGAIN. The corner green seemed to be fine this time. Then filled with new green glass AGAIN.

For the divit on the flower I etched with acid paste.

This fuse turned out fine. So I began painting with black trace lines. Finally I fired two matts on the tile. The Matts cover the whole tile and then you scrape away the parts you want color to come through. I think I probably could have put a few more matt's on it but I needed to work on some other projects.

I am very grateful for the mishaps. I learned a lot. I had never dealt with this kind of bad divit before.

Wow!  What a process Judy!!!  And cutting out that leaf, must have taken ages!  After seeing these I look at the piece with even more admiration!!!

Very impressive and what a process.
We DO learn from the mishaps. (I hope) Right now I feel like smashing every piece of glass I have. I had better be learning a whole lot!

Hang in there! Spring is coming and it will all look better soon. Either that or you can smash it , roll it in a tumbler to knock off the sharp points and spread it on the garden path to play in the sun  giggle It's always beautiful!

This is very nice! A fabulous gift, so pretty and I bet Lauren will cherish forever!

Also, I'm going to go to our local exotic foods grocery store sometime to see if they've got waterblommetjies, I'm intrigued!

I will!

(Waterblommetjies are mainly used in stew.  They have a subtle but distinguishable flavour.  I have seen them in tins before so you never know, your exotic foods grocery might have!)  Isn't this forum great, we go around the world in a weekend!

I read a little bit about waterblommetjies, and I'm thinking they may taste good in a vegetarian stew... at least they'd add a new interesting flavor! My son and I eat meat, but my husband doesn't, so "big pot meals" like soups and stews are usually whole-family friendly.

Our local exotic grocery, Jungle Jim's, is enormous (6 1/2 acres!)... seems to have a little bit of every little thing. It's actually fun to go grocery shopping there when we've got extra time and extra money to spend! So it will be neat to at least look for them, a mission!
Plus they won the coveted award for "America's Best Restroom!" It sits proudly in between the massive beer and wine sections:

End of thread hijack over!

Back to Judy/Lauren's tile: How big is it? It looks too detailed to be small, but Judy referred to it as a tile.
I just think it's so cool that so many glass techniques were used in it!

The tile is 19x14cm (which is about the size of an A5 paper!)

Wow, that exotic food grocery must be something else!!  Sometimes I really hate living out here in the middle of nowhere, and this is one of those times!!  I was a little concerned when you said you wanted to make vegetarian waterblommetjie stew as I had never heard of that!  But did a little search and what do you know, I actually found some!  The reason I wanted to look, is that in SA the word for stew in Afrikaans (and Waterblommetjie is Afrikaans) is 'Bredie' (sounds Bria-di), so I thought it would be better to search using that word to find some local recipes:
