Do it!

I have not had the pleasure, though if I remember correctly Judy K has taken it with him. I have viewed and am learning by the DVD set he has out.

Good memory! Yes I did. I took the 4 day, hands on, at HGH. It was awesome!!!!!!! His videos are great but the real thing is far better because you can ask questions and see the consistency of the paint when mixed.

Go for it, Anita. You won't be sorry.

Speaking as someone who does not have alot of the "greats" in terms of teachers near by:  I'd say to anyone JUMP at the chance to take a class from someone who is a leader in their discipline.  If you can afford it go for it.  Take the opportunity to learn from the best when ever you can.  If you decide it's not for you then fine but atleast if you've tried you know!  We'll want pix ofcourse....

No, but I would in a flash if I was able. Did do a day with someone teaching his method and bought all the goodies..... then we decided to move...sigh.
Will unpack it sometime soon, I hope.

Judy,

I thought you took it.  Didn't you say something about him haveing it at his home?  I wanted some more info about his shop, if

I don't get to go to Colorado.  It is so far and plane tickets are OUTRAGIOUS!!!  I am working on a grant but it has

limited dates.  I want be able to find out about getting it for the HGH show.  Not enough time.  I really wanted to do that.  I

wish they would have sent out all the info several months ago so I could have time to save money to go.  Kinda like the Vegas

Glass Expo, you wear off all the pages looking at the book, trying to decide, wishing, & dreaming what if???  Which one am I

going to take? confused  Any info appreicated.

Twice a year I get an email from him with his summer and fall workshop classes at his home studio. I can't find any info on it fast on line right now. Look around on line, he's in Washington. HGH is wonderful and I highly recommend it.

Judy,

Are you going to HGH?  I remember you saying you were going to it rather than Vegas next time.  I guess I'll save my pennies

for HGH next year.  Now that I know when it is.  I looked a long time back for his workshop at his studio but, didn't find

anything.  Said something about working on a site.  Under construction or something.  Not much now either.

Hello Anita,

Sunshine Glass has sponsored two Peter McGrain workshops over the years.

Since I started in stained glass back in the early 70's, painting seemed to be the most unobtainable goal for myself. Books on the subject (most written much earlier) made painting and firing glass too involved - need that seven year apprenticeship and the $1000 worth of brushes and $2000 kiln ... so I never pursued.

After introducing Pete to the group and making sure everything was in place at the first painting class, I went to return to the office to clean up paperwork. Pete wouldn't have any of that and ordered me to grab a brush and some glass and get with it. The next three days were amazing. There is no idle time, he keeps you moving and firing and painting and matting and firing again - then you do it all again on another project, learning another technique. My concerns about painting dissolved in the first 15 minutes.

Don't worry about your "artistic ability" or how far advanced you might be in the art/craft of glass work. Pete doesn't pass judgment on your artistic flair - he just wants you to get the technique down well.

By all means, take the class. Pete takes the mystery out of painting, reveals "secrets" and basically shows you that the technique isn't so hard after all. REFINING the technique, developing your own style - that's another story, but after taking the class, you'll be able to spend your time developing your style and not fumbling around learning to paint by trial and error.

Scott, thanks for sharing your experience with the painting classes.  It surely will clear up some questions for people.  Wish I lived closer so I could attend.  Does he give a class at the expo?  Maybe when I go there, I could take it, if he does.  I can only afford to do so much in one year.   giggle

Joan,

Peter has roots in upstate NY so he does come east often.
I believe he was to do a painting workshop at Oatka School of Glass this summer, but I don't see it on Oatka's website.
He is always at Expo, but he doesn't do the three or four day workshop thing there. He touches more on creative concepts, design and has done photographing stained glass work seminars in the past.
And of course, he has something like 7 or 8 hours worth of DVD's he's done with Joe Porcelli's group. The DVD's are great, and the first two on Traditional Glass Painting (six hours total) pretty much cover the major points of his three day Seminar. The third DVD covers Vitrifusaille, which combines glass fusing and glass painting.

Scott, what a wonderful thing for Peter to do for you while at work.  Wish I could've been there.  I did take the Unveiled Secrets class he done in Vegas '08.  He is a good speaker.  I should've taken the painting class but had so many to choose from.  I've been in glass for oh, 15 years.  Mostly self taught.  I just found out about Vegas classes in the last 2 years.  The net has really made me realize all that is out their for classes.  Just need some more green to do all I want to.  LOL.

I had a client call for painting and haven't the faintest on faces.  I also had a client want me to do the Dalle de Verry.  I one day am going to do it.  Thanks for all the info.

Thanks Judy for the email address and class info, I am now on his list.

Have a good one.

I was planning on purchasing the Peter McGrain videos so on your recommendation I will.  Does all glass painting have to be fired or can some be done cold and if so will it endure?  I am planning a small church window to honour my parents.  It will be a fairly simple pattern.  An etched Mustard Tree on stained glass and etched lettering with an inscription and my parents names.  Hopefully the painting part will be simple.  Just painting the etching and a bit of shading into the stained glass.  I attended the Glass Expo in Las Vegas last year and am planning to return this April.  There are so many classes I would like to attend but financially have to limit to just a couple.  I am considering Peter McGrain's Introduction to Traditional Painting on Glass but I also want to take his one on photographing glass.  There is also one on Insulated Glass and another on pen and ink and one or two on silkscreening.  Oh my!

I too took Peters 5 day class in 2005 at HGH, and bought his videos. I think the videos are very well done and worth the time and $

Does all glass painting have to be fired or can some be done cold and if so will it endure?
As already said, you can buy paint from Delphi and other hobby stores that cooks in the kitchen. That is how I started. But it can be scratched off and the durability is not the same. If all you need is the inscription painted, try taking it to a local glass shop and asking them to paint and cook it for you. The price to fire it around here would be $25 and then you would have to pay shop time to mix the paint and write the inscription, possibly another $50. But if your window lasts for 500 years that may be very well spent money. Your kiln is going to cost you at least $800.The class another few hundred and then the stuff to work with, maybe $200.

If you want to do a lot of painting and learn to fuse, go for it. I love fusing and painting and have never been sorry.

You might try etching your inscription and then using the kitchen paints. They stick pretty well and on an etched surface may be more durable.

I too would love to see your project when finished

Isn't the Vegas show wonderful! I too have gone for the last two years. This year is not possible. Too bad we could get together. Last year 7 or 8 of us from this site got together and had a wonderful silly time. Some of them are going back this year, but most of them are on another site right now. If you want to know how to find them I could PM you.

I have taken both Peters photo and traditional painting class. They are worth the money. 2 years ago, I spend 2 days taking Joseph 2 Bears insulation class. It was awesome if you like chemistry and the science of how and why. I do, and I think it was great. But it was hard watching all those other people building pretty things around me in other classes.

Welcome to both of you. We need more painters here  giggle. Kev is a talented character who is learning to paint also. Put some of your work in the gallery and join us regularly. Talk to you soon. Judy

Thank you Judy and Dave.  Your information is very helpful.  I have already ordered the two videos and can hardly wait for them to arrive.  I saw the painting kit on ebay.  I'll put it on my wish list.  Christmas is coming.
